[Rapture] The End

God only knows what's happening elsewhere in the sunken city. The sounds that echo through the pipes, through the metal that makes up the infrastructure, the vibrations through the glass, the broken pieces of it being dragged by the current past the windows. I hate that I've left Bucky to deal with culminating violence. I don't question his ability to do so, but he'll always be my partner and you don't leave your brother at the eleventh hour. Not if you have a choice.

I made a promise to a doctor, though, and to her patients, and I will not leave them to get through this alone.

I don't have the shield with me, it's on Bucky's arm. I haven't picked up a gun on the way and I refuse to touch the plasmids that have twisted the city's residents into degenerate facsimiles of human beings. I have the closest thing to tactical body armor I could find in the compound under a jacket, and I'm sprinting full out as I race through the labyrinthine network of tunnels and corridors. When I'm in the vicinity of the safehouse I slow, turning to scan the area. Any sounds of combat are distant, and my aim is to keep them that way. To get the girls to a bathysphere and get them out, and Brigid with them.

"Doctor!"

Chaos. It was as if the war had started all over again, only this time there was the feeling that it wouldn't end until they were all dead. Until Rapture was well and truly destroyed, lost to the sea it had fought back for so long. Another lost dream and the dreamers that went with it.

But she had survived worse, ja? "Come, Little Ones, we have to hurry." The girls were frightened, all of them seemed to have lost their protectors, their Daddies, and so Brigid had gathered them, keeping them as safe as she could, but now it was time to leave. Try and make it to the surface of that island the strangers were from. She expected that not all of them would make it.

What she didn't expect was the familiar voice of the American, the soldier she'd come to know and for a moment, she allowed herself to have some hope.

"Here, Herr Rogers!" She shouted back, taking one of the girl's hands and giving it a slight squeeze of reassurance as glowing eyes looked up at her, trusting. She could not let them down.

I barrel through a set of doors, making for the voice, and stop short in the room.

"Dr. Tenenbaum," I say with a brief incline of my head.

"It's not going well out there. Atlas- Fontaine- is offering EVE as incentive for the splicers to attack our people. It's bedlam, but hopefully..." I kneel to lift a bear that's been dropped and press it gently into the hands of one of the girls, one whose eyes are still glowing yellow. No chance to get the cure administered to everyone, it seems, but hopefully it's something we can continue when we get them to the surface.

"...It will give us the time we need to get these girls out of here."

"Of course he did."

It certainly sounded like Fontaine, greedy and wrathful. Why she had ever trusted the man... but that was history, and best left there to be a lesson for the future. She grabbed a bag full of notes and research and slung it over her shoulder.

It would not do to end up above all of this and have to start over again. Not after everything she'd accomplished, even if her research wasn't complete. She was close, so close to being able to save the Little Ones, all she needed was more time.

"Do you have a path in mind? I do not put it past Fontaine to try and flood some of the sections, trap us further."

"The one I took here leads directly back through the fighting," I tell her. If I have to, I'll get us through that, but I'd rather not bring the girls anywhere near what is rapidly becoming a killing field. The splicers are already frenzied- introducing Little Sisters to that equation is begging for trouble.

"Is there another bathysphere chamber near bye?"

"Ja, I think so." She motioned to the exit, herding the little girls with her even as she grabbed her pistol from a nearby table.

"It is close to an unstable portion of the city, but that simply means the splicers have mostly abandoned it. I do not know if the bathysphere is functioning, though."

Checking the pistol, she made sure it was loaded, that she had additional rounds in her pocket. "We should move quickly if that is where we are going."

"Brigid," I say, reaching out to catch her shoulder before speaking in a tongue I haven't used in years.

"We're going to do this." I hold her gaze for a moment before I start back for the door, shouldering it open and taking stock of what's beyond. I don't move forward, just hold the door clear for them, my eyes sharp, my ears open.

motherofadam: (jhecht: what are you doing)

She appreciated his use of her native tongue and she replied in the same, "Then we do it, and stop waiting. Just because these girls have lost their protectors, doesn't mean another won't try to take their places. If they're frightened, we may attract more than splicers."

Leaning down, she straightened the dress of one of the girls, speaking to her low and reassuringly. Nodding, the little girl headed off, waving for the others to follow.

"This way, Herr Rogers. The Little Ones can lead us."
